India is the largest exporter of water. Taps have started running dry across the country. Most of that comes down to the fact that India’s largest agricultural exports are rice and cotton, which both require thousands of liters of water for every kilogram of product. Sugar and water buffalo meat, two of the other leading farm exports, are also water-intensive. In a country where a third of the population lives in cities, agriculture uses about 90% of fresh water in India, compared with 64% in China, 60% in Brazil, and 44% in Nigeria.
